Change in Printing Schedule to Synchronize Online and Print Journals

Physical Review is synchronizing the online and print journals so that, beginning in July 2002, the monthly print issues will contain all papers published online in a given month. To accomplish this, the March through June 2002 issues of Physical Review will be following an extended production schedule, which will result in the print version of the journal arriving somewhat later than usual.

This rearrangement is necessary to avoid citation ambiguities currently caused when articles are published online at the end of one calendar year and appear in print journals dated with the next calendar year.

In the future, issues will be labeled by the month in which the articles are published online, rather than the month in which the print issue is distributed; for example, the July issue (containing articles published online in July) will be mailed towards the end of August. Although the mailing dates will be shifted forward, the time between online publication and print distribution will be essentially unchanged.

During the transition period, the March through June issues will be mailed at approximately six-week intervals rather than the usual four-week intervals. Print subscribers to Volume 65 will receive the same number of issues as usual, but over an extended period, and containing more articles than usual. After the transition period, online issues will close at the end of each month and the print journals will once again be mailed at approximately four-week intervals.
