Electronic Shelving
The American Physical Society announces a product to allow "electronic shelving" of journals for 2000
and beyond. The product is a CD-ROM, for each journal, containing PDFs of the year's journal to allow the transfer of the information onto the subscribing institution's server. Thus,
"shelving" the information contained in the journals. It will contain all of the articles for the year in PDF format for each journal and will be the functional equivalent of a
bound volume. It will contain, in its root directory, a top page with links to the TOC's for each issue. Each issue,
pdf's and toc, would be in a separate directory. The top page would also contain a link to a pdf of the masthead and author index. The files can be read with a conventional internet Explorer or NetScape browser, providing an electronic archive. The CD-ROMs will be available at the end of the year. The CD-ROM will be priced at $50 per disc with a current subscription (PRB, PRE and PRL will require two discs) each of the other journals will hopefully be on one disc. The CD-ROMs do not provide the searching capability which is included in PROLA (Physical Review Online Archive) or in the WEB versions of the journals. Many librarians have expressed interest in securing their own archival copy of the information in the annual issues. This is the most economical way APS has found to provide the archival content (except for PROLA which will feature everything APS has published back to 1893).
Access is limited to institutional users subject to the terms and conditions set forth by the current journal
subscription. APS online journals and their content, including abstracts, are
copyrighted by the APS and are subject to all applicable copyright, database protection, and other rights of the APS as copyright owner and publisher under the laws of the United States and other countries.
